Mobile signal booster: what it is, when it works and how we fit it

A mobile signal booster takes the signal that exists outside your house and spreads it inside. It is not a router, it creates no WiFi and it does not change your plan: your phone stays your phone, on your number and your provider. What changes is that there is network in the living room.

The three parts, and what each one does

  1. The outdoor antenna. It goes on the roof or high on the façade, aimed at whichever of your operator's masts is best seen from your house. It transmits nothing: it only collects. It is the part that does half the work, and putting it in the right place is what separates a good installation from a useless one. How it is chosen and aimed.
  2. The booster. A small box inside the house. It takes what the outdoor antenna collects and gives it back with enough strength for a phone to use. It is the only part that transmits, and that is why it is the only one that needs the operator's permission.
  3. The indoor antenna. One or several, depending on the size of the house, in the places where you actually talk: living room, kitchen, bedroom, study.

The set works with the network you already have. There is no new SIM card, no plan to take out, no second bill, and we do not touch your router or your WiFi. When we finish, your phone shows bars inside the house and rings when somebody calls you: that is the whole product.

When it works, and when we will tell you no

A booster does not manufacture signal: it spreads it. That is why the one question that decides whether your house can be fixed is whether there is anything to pick up on the roof. There nearly always is, even when nothing shows downstairs; sometimes there is not, and then this route has nothing to offer.

  • It works when there is a steady signal on the roof, however weak, and none reaches inside. That is nearly every coastal urbanisation.
  • It works when the house is far from the village, on flat ground, and the signal arrives spent: height and a directional antenna recover what was lost.
  • It sometimes works when a sierra is in the way: it depends on whether some other mast can be seen from the roof, even a distant one. Only measuring tells.
  • It does not work when there is no operator's signal on the roof at all. No device fixes that, ours included.
  • It does not work if your operator does not authorise the installation. And then we do not install and you do not pay for an installation.

In Spain a mobile-telephony booster may only be switched on by the operator who holds those frequencies, 'or by whoever that operator authorises'. We request that authorisation in writing and in your name before anything goes up. We do not promise it will be granted: we promise to ask properly and to show you the answer. What it costs

A single payment and no monthly fee, ours or anyone's. Three fixed quotes according to the size of the house and the number of indoor antennas needed: 590 €, 890 € and 1,190 €, VAT included. The survey beforehand costs 49 € and is free if you go ahead. It is all set out in the price table.

FAQ

Questions about this

What is the difference between a booster and a repeater?
None: it is the same device under different names. It is also sold as a repeater, a signal booster, a coverage kit or a re-transmitter. What changes is not the device but whether it is authorised or not.
Does it work with a British or other foreign phone?
Yes — the booster does not care whose phone it is: it strengthens whatever Spanish network signal is on your roof, and your handset latches onto it as it would in the street. What is worth checking is your roaming plan. We explain it in a UK mobile in Spain.
Does it boost mobile data too?
It strengthens the signal on whichever band is fitted, and that signal carries calls, messages and data alike. But we do not sell speed and we do not measure it: what we sell and what we check before leaving is that you can talk inside your house.
What happens if the power goes off?
The booster switches off, like any plugged-in device, and the signal indoors goes back to what it was before. That is why we always say to keep another way available, and why we do not promise 112 or emergency calls. If your area loses power often, there is a 149 € UPS that keeps the equipment running for a while.
Do I need internet or WiFi at home?
No. That is precisely the difference from WiFi Calling. The booster works with the mobile network, not with your internet connection: it works just the same in a house with no fibre and no router.
