Does WiFi Calling work with a UK mobile in Spain?
It is the first question our British neighbours ask. The honest answer is: it depends on your UK provider, many block it outside the United Kingdom, and you can check it in five minutes with nobody coming out. Here is how. And at the end is what happens if the answer is no — the part nobody tells you.
In the municipality of Rojales, 11,624 residents out of 17,652 hold foreign nationality. In La Romana it is 24 % of the population, mostly British. In Jacarilla, 19.8 %, with the British community the largest. A great many people around here live with the phone number they have always had — a UK number.
WiFi Calling is the free route: if your UK provider lets you use it in Spain and you have WiFi at home, your number rings without costing you a euro and without anyone coming out. It is worth checking before anything else, which is why the first thing on this page is how to check it. What we sell is a different thing — bringing the actual mobile signal inside the house — and that does not depend on your UK provider at all.
How to know in five minutes whether your number will work
There is no need to wait for anyone to come. With your phone and any WiFi:
- Connect to a WiFi network that works — a bar's, a neighbour's, the supermarket's — and put the phone into aeroplane mode, leaving WiFi switched on.
- Look at the top of the screen. If it shows 'Wi-Fi Calling', or your operator's name followed by 'Wi-Fi', the feature is active.
- With the phone still in aeroplane mode, call someone. If the call goes through, your number works over WiFi in Spain. That is the only test that counts.
- If nothing appears, look in the settings: on iPhone, Settings → Phone → Wi-Fi Calling; on Android, Settings → Connections or Networks → Wi-Fi Calling. If the option is not there at all, it is your operator or your handset that does not offer it.
- If you cannot find it, ask your operator in these exact words: 'is Wi-Fi Calling enabled on my line, and does it work while I am in Spain?' Both halves of the question matter, because they are not the same thing.
We do not publish any specific UK operator's policy here. We tried to check it on their official pages on 27 August 2026 and could not open them, so we do not write it down. What we do know is that several UK operators restrict this feature to their own country, and that it is exactly the sort of detail worth confirming with them before spending anything.
If your UK number does not allow WiFi Calling, this still works
Here is the good news, and it is worth grasping because it turns everything above around: what we install does not depend on your UK operator or on any setting in your phone. When you step outside, your UK mobile latches onto the Spanish network on its own and roams, as it has done since you arrived. The only thing that happens inside your house is that the Spanish network does not get in. We bring it in.
That is why a UK number is not a special case for us: your handset sees exactly the same network it sees out in the street, shows its bars, and your usual number rings inside the house. There is nothing to switch on, no permission to ask of your UK provider, and no need to change handset. It works just as well for an eight-year-old phone, and for your visitors'.
Two things still have to be said. One: check your roaming terms, because some UK providers reintroduced charges for using your phone in the EU after Brexit, and no installation changes that. Two: the installation needs the prior authorisation of the Spanish operator whose network we amplify — we request it, and if it is not granted nothing is installed and you pay for no installation.
Emergency calls are never promised, whatever number you hold. Not 112 and not 999. Always keep another way of calling for help available in the house; we show you which one during the installation.
