How to check whether there is enough mobile signal at your house

The bars on the screen are not a measurement: every manufacturer decides how many to show and at what thresholds, so two phones on the same table show different things. Underneath those bars there is a real number, in dBm, and you can see it yourself without installing anything.

Where the number is, on your own phone

  • Android. Settings → About phone → Status, or SIM status. Look for 'Signal strength': you will see something like −103 dBm. On some models it sits under Settings → Connections.
  • iPhone. Field Test Mode opens by dialling *3001#12345#* and pressing call. A service screen opens with the cell measurements; look for RSRP. To leave, close the app.
  • Either of them. Note the reading in three places: where there is never any signal, next to the window, and outside the house. The difference between those three numbers is your problem, measured.

What the number means

It is a power and it runs negative, so the less negative, the better: −80 is far better than −110. On 4G the measurement that matters is called RSRP, and the range the standard itself contemplates runs from −44 dBm (right beside the mast) to −140 dBm (nothing). That range is defined in 3GPP TS 36.133; what follows, by contrast, is our own working rule and not a standard:

  • Better than −85 dBm — signal to spare. If you have this outside and nothing inside, your case is a textbook one and it turns out very well.
  • Between −85 and −100 — good or normal signal. This is the range a booster works comfortably in.
  • Between −100 and −110 — tight. It can be done, and this is where putting the antenna in the right place rather than the convenient one shows most.
  • Worse than −110 — on the edge. Sometimes height and a well-aimed directional antenna get it out, and sometimes not. It is exactly the case where you measure before selling anything.
  • No reading, or −140 — there is nothing to amplify on that band.

A warning about the reading: a single instant's number is worth nothing. Stand still for half a minute and watch how it moves. A reading that jumps twelve points up and down while you stand still is a bounced signal, and a bounced signal is worse than a weak steady one.

What you cannot measure and we can

Your phone measures where you are, a metre and a half off the floor and behind a wall. The place that decides the installation is the roof, and the number up there is usually very different. A field meter also shows two things a handset does not: which particular mast is being heard at each bearing, and how cleanly it arrives against the noise. That is what lets you say 'aim there, even though it is further away', which is the decision that changes the result most.

That is why the survey exists and why it is charged for: it is a good hour on the roof with a meter, and it ends with a yes or a no in writing. It costs 49 € and is free if you go ahead. If the answer is no, it is no, and we charge for no installation.

Questions about this

Are the coverage-measuring apps any use?
For seeing the number and how it changes as you move, yes, and they are fine for doing the house test. What they do not do is tell you which mast you are hearing or how cleanly it arrives, and those two things are what decide where the antenna is aimed.
What if every phone in my house shows a different number?
That is normal, and it does not mean one of them is broken. Every manufacturer measures and rounds its own way. What is comparable is the same handset in two different places: that difference is real.
Field Test Mode does not open on my iPhone.
It changes between iOS versions and on some models it is no longer where it was. If it will not open, the three-reading test with the bars still works for seeing the difference between indoors and outdoors, which is what really matters before calling us.
