A connected pool: watching the water and spending less on the pump

In a house used a few months a year, the pool is what causes the most work while you are away: the water can turn green in a week, and the pump is often the appliance that uses the most electricity in summer. Two things can be connected: the water reading and the pump.

What a pool pump uses

Repsol gives a simple example: an average 1 kW pump running 8 hours a day in summer uses 8 kWh a day, about 240 kWh a month, around 36 € a month with electricity at 0.15 €/kWh. With the price you pay (check your bill) the sum changes, but that is the order of magnitude: a pool can be a large share of the summer bill.

The variable speed pump

A variable speed pump filters the same water turning more slowly for more hours, and consumption falls sharply because power drops faster than speed. A common 1 HP model, the ESPA Silen Plus variable speed, sells for roughly 750 to 900 € depending on the shop checked. The maker claims savings of up to 84 %: that is their figure, not our measurement, and it depends on how many hours you run it.

If your current pump works fine, the first free step is to check the timer: many pumps still filter the same hours in October as in August.

Water sensors with an app

These are floats that stay in the pool and measure pH, the disinfecting power of the chlorine (ORP) and temperature, and send it to your phone. Two examples with a published price:

DeviceMeasuresConnectionPrice
iopool EcO StartpH, ORP, temperatureBluetooth; wifi with a separate gateway279 €
Blueriiot Blue Connect PluspH, ORP, temperature, conductivitySigfox, Bluetooth, optional wifi399 €

Look at the connection column: over Bluetooth you only see the data when you are standing by the pool. To see it from your home country the sensor has to reach the internet, and in a house without wifi that is exactly the problem. If your house has no connection, read «Internet in a holiday home» first.

A sensor warns, it does not fix. If the water goes out of balance and nobody adds the chemicals, the alert is only useful to call whoever looks after your pool.

Where the figures come from

Prices checked in September 2026. They change: take them as an order of magnitude and always ask for the final price in writing.

FAQ

Questions about this

How many hours should the pump run?
It depends on the volume, the pump and the water temperature, and each maker gives its own table. The safe answer is to follow yours and cut hours when the water cools.
Does the sensor work without wifi in the house?
Over Bluetooth, only when you are nearby. The Blue Connect Plus also uses the Sigfox network, which does not depend on your wifi; the others need a gateway connected to the internet.
