Charging an electric car at home in Spain: price, rules and tax relief in 2026

Charging at home overnight costs a fraction of a public fast charger. The installation is a job for an authorised electrician, with its own rule and certificate, and the price depends mostly on the distance between the fuse board and the car.

What it costs

A fitted 7.4 kW smart wallbox in a detached house costs roughly 1,200 to 1,700 €, VAT included, according to a 2026 price guide. What moves the figure most is the cable length from the board, whether it runs along a façade or through a trench, and whether your contracted power can cope with the load or has to be raised.

What you save: the same source estimates about 1.50 to 2 € per 100 km charging at home on a night rate, against about 9 to 13 € on public fast chargers.

The rule: ITC-BT-52

Charging installations fall under technical instruction ITC-BT-52 of the Low Voltage Regulation (Royal Decree 1053/2014). In practice: an authorised installer does it, with its own circuit and protections, and hands you the installation certificate. Keep it: it is needed for the deduction and your insurer will ask for it.

Grants: MOVES III is closed

In the Valencian Community, the MOVES III programme for charging points was open from 22 July to 31 December 2025, and IVACE showed the funds exhausted by 30 September 2025. If someone sells you the installation today «with MOVES», ask to see the open call.

What the Tax Agency does publish is an income tax (IRPF) deduction of 15 % of what you pay to install a charging point, for amounts paid between 30 June 2023 and 31 December 2026, with a maximum base of 4,000 € (up to 600 € of deduction). These extensions are passed by decree and have changed several times: confirm with your adviser before counting on it.

And the connection

«Smart» wallboxes schedule charging in cheap hours and are controlled from an app, but for that they need wifi or mobile signal in the garage or driveway. If nothing reaches there, the charger still charges, without the app.

We do not install chargers or do electrical work. This guide exists so that you reach the quote knowing what to ask.

Where the figures come from

Prices checked in September 2026. They change: take them as an order of magnitude and always ask for the final price in writing.

FAQ

Questions about this

Do I have to raise my contracted power?
Not always. A charger with dynamic load management shares the power with the rest of the house. The installer works it out from your bill.
Will an ordinary socket do?
For occasional charging, with the cable supplied with the car, yes, but very slowly. For daily use, a dedicated charging point is what the rule provides for.
