Telecare for older people in Alicante province: public, Red Cross or private

Telecare is a unit at home or a pendant with a button: when pressed, it connects to a care centre that answers 24 hours a day. In Alicante the public service is requested through your town hall social services, or within the Generalitat dependency application, and in both cases it can be free. Before paying for a private one, check whether you qualify. And before signing up for any, check that the device will have signal inside the house.

The public Generalitat telecare

The Generalitat offers «Teleasistencia Avanzada» to people with a recognised dependency who live at home, and describes it as completely free. It comes as a fixed version (a unit at home) and a mobile one (pendant or wristband), 24 hours a day, all year. You apply within the dependency application, or later with the Advanced Telecare Service form.

There is a second route for older people without a recognised dependency: people over 65 living alone at risk, or couples over 65 who both have difficulties, and exceptionally ages 60 to 64. A report from the town hall social worker is required.

How to start from Rojales

Through the town hall social services. Rojales town hall lists the contact on its useful numbers page: serviciossociales@rojales.es and 96 671 50 01. If you live in another town, it is the same route through your own town hall.

In Alicante city: the municipal telecare service

Alicante city council runs its own home telecare service (STAD), governed by regulations published in the provincial official bulletin on 17 January 2025. Article 6 says it in one line: «El servicio es gratuito para el usuario», the service is free for the user. It is open to people registered on the padrón and actually living in the city for at least the three previous months: over 65s with limited autonomy, over 18s with autonomy difficulties or a disability of 65 % or more, and people recovering after a hospital stay with no family network.

You can apply all year round, by appointment, at the citizen service offices (Oficinas de Atención Ciudadana) or the local social teams (Equipos Sociales de Zona), or online with a digital certificate. The council asks for an identity document, the SIP health card and a medical report, and there is an income limit set in a scale updated every year with the IPREM index. One detail worth knowing: the regulations make the municipal service incompatible with a recognised dependency when your individual care programme already includes telecare. In that case your route is the Generalitat one.

Red Cross and private companies

The Red Cross offers mobile telecare with GPS location, on its own device, a watch or an app, and does not publish a price on its website: it refers you to its free number, 900 100 333. Private companies do not clearly publish their prices either; comparison sites mention monthly fees of a few tens of euros. Always ask for the price in writing, with what it includes and any minimum term.

What almost nobody checks: the signal

A mobile telecare pendant, or a fixed unit that no longer uses a copper phone line, talks over the mobile network. If the phone has no signal inside the house, the unit will not have it either, exactly where it matters: in the bathroom, in the bedroom. Before signing up, check the signal in those rooms with «How to check your mobile signal».

This is not our opinion. The Alicante municipal regulations define telecare as a service that works «a través de la línea telefónica», over the phone line, and allow the council to exclude anyone who lacks «medios técnicos o condiciones necesarias para su instalación», the technical means or conditions needed to install it. And the manual of a Red Cross mobile telecare terminal puts it this way: «Para establecer comunicaciones (incluidas las de alarma) es imprescindible que exista cobertura de telefonía móvil Vodafone», mobile coverage is essential to make any call, alarm calls included. That manual is for an old model. The network your device uses today may be a different one, which is why you have to ask.

Three questions before you sign

First: does the device use a landline or the mobile network? Second: if it uses the mobile network, which operator is the SIM card from? Third: who checks the signal in the bathroom and the bedroom, and what happens if it does not reach? With the operator name you can measure it yourself with a phone on that same network, room by room. If there is signal outside the house and none inside, that is exactly what we solve, with the operator authorisation: «Mobile signal booster».

We do not sell telecare or alarms connected to a monitoring centre. What we do is make sure the phone has signal inside the house. If the house has none, that is the first thing to solve, whatever service you choose.

Where the figures come from

Prices checked in September 2026. They change: take them as an order of magnitude and always ask for the final price in writing.

FAQ

Questions about this

Is public telecare free?
The Advanced Telecare for people with a recognised dependency is, according to the Generalitat. For the other route, for older people without dependency, the official page gives no cost: ask at social services.
Can I apply if I am not registered on the padrón?
Town hall social services serve residents on the padrón. If you spend most of the year here, registering is the first step.
Where do you apply for telecare in Alicante city?
At Alicante city council, by appointment, at the citizen service offices (Oficinas de Atención Ciudadana) or the local social teams (Equipos Sociales de Zona), or online with a digital certificate. You can apply all year round and, according to its regulations, the service is free for the user.
Does telecare work without a landline?
It depends on the device. Mobile telecare and units that do not use a copper line talk over the mobile network, with a SIM card from one specific operator. Ask which one it is and check that this network reaches the rooms where the device will be used.
What if there is no mobile signal in my house?
A device that talks over the mobile network cannot call from a spot with no signal. Say so before signing up and ask them to test it in the bathroom and the bedroom. If there is signal outside the house, it can be brought indoors with a booster authorised by the operator: that is what we do. If there is no signal outside either, a booster will not help and we will tell you so.
