Air conditioning that uses less: what to look for and what it costs
In the Vega Baja, air conditioning runs from June to September and more and more as heating in winter. Two decisions set what it uses: the unit you buy and the temperature you set.
The temperature you set
IDAE, the Spanish public energy saving institute, says that 26 °C or more, with suitable clothing, is enough for comfort in summer, and that each degree of difference means a saving of roughly 7 %. Setting 22 °C instead of 26 °C does not cool faster: it only makes the unit run longer.
The unit: SEER and SCOP
The EU energy label for air conditioners gives two figures: SEER, cooling efficiency over the season, and SCOP, heating efficiency. The higher they are, the less it uses for the same cooling or heating. A SEER of 8.5 or more corresponds to class A+++. If you will also use it for heating, look at SCOP just as carefully.
What it costs
OCU puts a basic installation of a 1x1 split at about 375 €, VAT included, and 2.5 kW units from about 350 €. The installer must hold the fluorinated gas certification (Royal Decree 115/2017): ask for it, because without it the manufacturer's warranty may not cover the unit.
What costs nothing
- Clean the filters at the start of the season.
- Lower blinds and awnings during hours of direct sun.
- Do not leave it running in an empty house: if you want it on before you arrive, that is done remotely (see the remote AC guide).
We do not install air conditioning. If you write, we reply with what we know, and about the part that is ours: making sure the unit has a connection so it can be controlled from afar.
Where the figures come from
Prices checked in September 2026. They change: take them as an order of magnitude and always ask for the final price in writing.
