No signal with Vodafone at home in Spain: what to check, and in what order

If you have no Vodafone signal inside the house, start with what is free: WiFi Calling, which comes switched off on the phone and has to be turned on by hand. Vodafone is licensed in three low bands, the ones that get through a wall best, so when its signal does not make it into a house the cause usually lies in distance, terrain or the wall itself. If there is signal outside and none inside, that is the case a booster solves, installed with Vodafone's authorisation.

The bands Vodafone is licensed in

Vodafone Spain published them itself in its press room on 21 July 2021, the day it won its 700 MHz block in the Ministry's auction. It is the list the operator declares, with its date: it does not say which band the mast nearest to you transmits.

  • 700 MHz · 2x10 MHz · low band
  • 800 MHz · 2x10 MHz · low band
  • 900 MHz · 2x10 MHz · low band
  • 1,800 MHz · 2x20 MHz · mid band
  • 2,100 MHz · 2x15 MHz (FDD) + 5 MHz (TDD) · mid band
  • 2,600 MHz · 2x20 MHz (FDD) + 20 MHz (TDD) · mid band
  • 3,700 MHz · 90 MHz · high band

What matters for a house is the first three. A low band travels further and loses less going through a wall, and Vodafone itself said that day that with 700 MHz it would offer better coverage and service inside buildings too. So if you have no Vodafone signal indoors, the usual reason is not a lack of bands: the mast is far away, there is high ground in between, or the wall eats what little arrives. That is our reasoning, not a measurement of your house. The four causes are explained in why there is no signal at home.

First, and free to try: Vodafone WiFi Calling

Vodafone calls it Voz sobre WiFi, and defines it as a service that lets you call over WiFi, with high-definition sound, in places with poor coverage. It also sends and receives SMS. The three steps its help page gives:

  1. Check that your handset is compatible and runs the latest software version.
  2. Go to Settings (Ajustes), then Connections (Conexiones), and switch on Wi-Fi Calling (Llamadas Wi-Fi). Vodafone warns that it comes switched off by default: if you have never touched it, it is off.
  3. Connect to a secure WiFi network. Any operator's will do.

Two things worth knowing. The calls are not separate: according to Vodafone, they count against the voice minutes of your tariff. And its help page says nothing about 112 or about use abroad, so we take neither for granted: if the emergency call is your concern, what you need indoors is mobile coverage.

When a booster is the answer, and when it is not

  • Yes, if there is a steady Vodafone signal on the terrace or the roof and none indoors.
  • Yes, if the house has no fixed internet, or you want real coverage throughout the house rather than depending on WiFi for every call.
  • No, if only calls fail and you have fibre: switch on WiFi Calling and you do not need us.
  • No, if there is no signal on the roof either. A booster amplifies what arrives, it does not manufacture it.
  • No, if for the last few hours it has not worked in the street either: that is a network fault, and the fix is a call to Vodafone.

A booster is only switched on with the operator's authorisation: without it, it is an offence, which is why we do not install without it. Here the frequency is Vodafone's and the authorisation is requested from Vodafone. We handle that after measuring, with your phone and your SIM. We do not promise it will be granted: if it is not, we do not install and you do not pay for the installation. What the equipment looks like is in the signal booster, and how to read the signal yourself before calling us is in checking the signal at home.

Is there another line in the house on DIGI? That case is different, because two networks sit behind it: no signal with DIGI.

FAQ

Questions about this

Which bands does Vodafone use in Spain?
Vodafone Spain stated on 21 July 2021 that it holds licences at 700, 800, 900, 1,800, 2,100, 2,600 and 3,700 MHz. The first three are low bands, the ones that travel furthest and get through a wall best. The list does not say which band each mast transmits.
How do I switch on Vodafone WiFi Calling?
In Settings, Connections, switch on Wi-Fi Calling. Vodafone warns that it comes switched off by default. First check that the handset is compatible and runs the latest software version, and connect to a secure WiFi network from any operator.
Do Vodafone WiFi calls use up minutes?
Yes. Vodafone says calls made over Voz sobre WiFi count against the voice minutes of your tariff.
Does a signal booster work with Vodafone?
Only if a Vodafone signal worth boosting reaches the outside of the house, and only with Vodafone's authorisation. We measure it during the survey and we request the authorisation ourselves. We do not promise it will be granted: if it is not, we do not install and you do not pay for the installation.

Still no Vodafone signal inside the house?

Tell us where you live, how many bars you see on the terrace and how many indoors, and whether you have already switched on WiFi Calling. We will tell you whether your case has a technical solution, and if it does not we will tell you that too. The survey costs 49 € and is free if an installation follows.
